Greenford Methodist Church 98th Anniversary

In 1925 friends from Hanwell Methodist Church together with a few Greenford locals believed that God was calling them to establish a church in Greenford.  They rented Greenford Park residents hut in Queens Avenue, Greenford to hold evening services and in 1926 the Trustees purchased our present site with 3.5 acres of land! (Some of which was subsequently sold off).

In 1928 a large hut was built to the side of our current church – some people may remember the hut which was used for all occasions including Guiding groups until it was demolished some years ago leaving a large now grassed and wooded area to the side of the current church.

In 1932 the first permanent brick church was built together with the primary room and vestry. Then, in 1939 plans were passed for a new larger church and hall to be built but this was put ‘on hold’ because of the outbreak of World War II in September that year. Unfortunately, the 1932 church was affected by bombing in the Greenford area and the building was rendered structurally unsafe so the congregation returned to the hut to worship.

Post-war, the new hall was built and opened in 1949 using some of the roof timbers from the old damaged church and the ‘new church’ opened in 1957 at a final cost of £33,000. An additional room was added in 1964 to accommodate the expanding Sunday School.

Many generations of families have worshipped at Greenford Methodist Church but very few people are still with us who remember the early days of the Church.

As a family we were very lucky to find Greenford Methodist Church after we moved to Greenford in the 1980’s with three young children under 5 – we were made to feel so welcome and blessed.  We have fond memories of celebrating Church anniversaries with Fairs, Barn dances, Quiz nights, Murder Mystery evenings, dramas and concerts including a wonderful production of ‘Joseph and His Multi-coloured Dream Coat’ which raised a huge amount of money for charity

The last few years have been difficult for everyone but to celebrate this year’s 98th anniversary we will be holding a ‘bring and buy’ stall on Saturday 17th June including a plant sale outside the Church with tea and cakes from 10.30 - 12.30 so please do come along and join us for a lovely morning of catching up with friends old and new and the opportunity to look forward to a new year of worshipping at Greenford Methodist Church.
